Well, you are almost right, it is a door but the official name is a Smoke Box Door.
Take a look at the picture and this painted up version (they are sold unpainted metal) is superglued onto the front of a Steam Wagon. But you can fit it to a Mamod Steam Roller or a Traction Engine if you like.
A brilliant idea eh!
